Brand Interactive AR Game

Orville Redenbacher Popcorn has a tradition of being a fun, interactive group snack. In fact, tossing and catching the popped kernels in your mouth is a game as old as popcorn itself. So we decided to see if we could create that same human experience using digital technology in the social media space. Combine that with the insight that when people see popcorn being eaten, they crave it themselves, and you've got an irresistibly Pavlovian app.

By applying a clever combination of both facial recognition and augmented reality technologies, we took a deep dive into the world of virtual snacking. By accessing a laptop's camera, users' mouths could be identified and tracked. The gameplay consisted of users trying to align their mouths with popcorn falling from the top of the screen to score as many points as possible. Brand messaging was incorporated throughout and scoring was tracked on a leaderboard to drive repeat visits. At a time when branded apps on Facebook were still being embraced, we created a surprising and fun new take on the brand’s original mouthwatering, must-have experience.
